New UDT-SEAL Museum Building on Track

The National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum is the only museum dedicated solely to collect, preserve, organize, interpret and share with the military and the public, objects, images and publications to foster the understanding and appreciation of the United States Navy Underwater Demolition Teams, Scouts and Raiders, Naval Combat Demolition Units, Office of Strategic Services Maritime Units and SEALs. It is the only museum of its kind in the world.

The physical size of our collection of uniforms, weapons, vehicles, photographs, multi-media displays and documents have outgrown our present physical space and an expansion is now a necessity with less than half of our artifacts on display. We have become crowded to the point of congestion in the public areas on busy days and our small theater which only seats eighteen is frequently standing room only. The museum is also an educational institution where people of all ages and walks of life can learn about the UDT-SEALs both historically and their role in modern warfare.

Four years in planning, a new building of 8,400 sq. ft. will be added to the current museum which will give us a total facility of 13,400 sq. ft. The expansion building features two large galleries for display, a theater area, new offices and a glassed in lounge overlooking a gallery for visitors to rest and reflect. The buildings will be adjacent and connected by an enclosed walkway.

A design and build team has been selected to construct this state-of-the-art exhibition gallery, to house our improved collection of showcases and amenities, and accommodate varied and larger audiences. The museum will now be able to present major new exhibits drawn from our vast, unique collection and can accommodate rotating exhibits from other institutions. We will utilize new technologies, as well as traditional artifacts to share our stories. We plan to create "sensory environments, video screens, "please touch", employ interactive hands-on exhibits and activities, all designed to engage the visitor.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held as a part of this year's muster and actual construction will begin in early winter but we still need your help. More than a million dollars has been raised to complete the UDT-SEAL Memorial wall and begin construction of the new addition but we need another $500,000 for interior completion, displays, exhibits and ongoing maintenance. Please fill out the form provided and return with your donation instructions. On behalf of the museum staff, board of directors and your fellow members we thank you for your continuing generous support.
